What’s New in this edition
The Ministry of Health is committed to ensuring provision of quality maternal and newborn health services. Continuous capacity building of health care workers using the EmONC Training and Mentorship package is one of the key enablers of this mission.
The Third editions of the Mentor and Mentee Manuals for the National Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care (EmONC) Training and Mentorship Package contain two main updates: The Labor Care Guide and the Immediate Resuscitation of the Newborn.
The Labor Care Guide: In 2018, the WHO rolled the Recommendations on Intrapartum care for a positive Childbirth experience. This guidance contains a total of 56 recommendations, including 26 new and 30 pre-existing ones. The major principle of these recommendations is Respectful Maternity Care (RMC) for better experience of the child birth process by mothers, with aim for improved outcomes of labour. The labour care guide is the tool designed by WHO to guide the implementation of these recommendations in the care of women in active labour in all settings. It is simpler to use, when compared with the historic partograph, and contains enhanced evidence-based parameters for the duration and progress of labour. It contains eight sections, namely: Patient identifier information, Supportive care, Care of the baby, Care of the Woman, Progress of labour, Medications, Shared Decision making, and Summary of labour. Based on high quality evidence, the LCG is expected to contribute to the Ministry’s initiatives to prevent unnecessary CS and other interventions,
while providing guidance for provision of such interventions in a timely manner when they are needed. This manual contains all the essential guidance for training and mentorship to support the roll out and sustained implementation of the LCG.
Newborn Resuscitation: In 2025, the Ministry of health developed the updated Comprehensive Newborn Care (CNC) training curriculum for health care workers. It was important to align the Module on Immediate care ofthe Newborn in EmONC to the expert updates contained in the CNC curriculum. That has been incorporated to this edition to adopt the structured approach to the resuscitation of the newborn, involving: anticipation and preparation; initial evaluation and resuscitation in the ABC sequence of Airway-Breathing-Circulation with reassessments; and post-resuscitation care in the ABCDEF approach. This edition maintains all the important updates contained in the previous editions including and not limited to: Diagnosis and Management of postpartum haemorrhage using EMOTIVE bundle; innovative interventions such as NASG and UBT; and the role of obstetric point of care ultrasound.
